Journal from a wayward adventure: Melbourne

135th and 136th coffee in Melbourne, Soldier On

3/4 latte (5 senses’ Dark Horse) and longblack (single origin: Brazil)/Synesso

I walked down Chapel Street, past all the people, happy people, angry people, old people, beautiful people and guess-it-doesn’t-matter people, and listened to the sound around me. The whipping sound as the tram approaches, the far off sound of construction, all these conversation, steps and doors, the ruffing sound of winter clothes. The world seemed happy, and we are all trying to carry on, as best as we can.

‘Men shall find grace.’

Barista: How d’you like it (single origin)?
Me: Yeah, it’s good. (shrugging) It’s well balanced, and as it cooled down, it actually had a herbal taste that reminded me of a chinese sweet I had as a kid.
Barista: Interesting. To me, it doesn’t really have that kick (of blends).

134th coffee in Melbourne, Hawk & Hunter

flatwhite and juice/ La Marzocco FB70

It’s a good day, which I’m very grateful, for nothing cheers you up more when it’s all sunny outside on your day off, does it, all sunny. My immune system has been strained recently, trying to stay healthy, especially when it’s so cold in the room that I have to wear down jacket to sleep, which, FYI, really isn’t comfortable. So to reboot my energy, I decided to treat myself to a late breakkie alongside coffee.

I appreciate they show the effort to make the flatwhite ‘flat’.

Also, there’s something about thick cut bacon (by ‘thick cut’, it really was ‘thick’ thick, 1.5 centimeters!). I don’t know much about cooking. But it just seems so simple, easy, no fuss at all, yet it completes you.

Me: (getting money out of the pay envelope.)
Staff: Oh, big pay day, yeah?
Me: (if only you know how much is in here, brother.)

130th and 131st coffee in Melbourne, Annoying Brother

Flatwhite and long black/Synesso

(The most friendly, and the prettiest, staff asked me if I want a drawing after I fixed up the bill.)

I could be your wizard, baby. I could kiss away the pain.

128th and 129th coffee in Melbourne, Filter

Pour-over (Kibungere, Burundi) and flatwhite/V60, coffee machine hidden away

(There’s a ‘use the other door please’ sign on what was designed to be the main entrance. A few feet away, the ‘door’ has a dark grey and ceiling to floor mat/curtain hanging over it.)
Me: Nice entrance. (somewhat sarcastically, couldn’t help it.)
Barista: (smiles)

146th day in Melbourne, LP. opens its door, and it’s freakin’ awesome!

All the anxiety and self-doubt disappeared completely once the coffee machine started running. The sound of the grinder grinding coffee, the kissing sound of steaming milk, and the super hip music playing out loud. Yes, without a doubt, LP. is making some really awesome coffee! (Trust me, soon to be joined by fantastic food, too!) And I just feel so stupid about being so nervous and stressed before. Yes, Lord, everything in its right place! (well, gradually…)

(never really good at taking “the moment” selfie, this is after cleaning up on the first day. Isn’t our Synesso Hydra/Hybrid just awesome?! Isn’t it just?!)

136th day in Melbourne, MICE
There’s simply too much to see in one single day! Originally, I didn’t plan to sit through the Australian Barista Championship semifinal. But once I sat down, I was hooked, and found myself idolizing all those inspiring baristas before me. Look at them! They’re really, really, really awesome!!by the way, saw current 2013 WBC champion, Pete Licata, in the audience.

134th day in Melbourne, op!
Went shopping for clothes!! $34 for two jumpers, two shirts and two t-shirts. Am I looking scandinavian enough? (posing…)The thing about trying to look my most fashionable self is that it’s extremely difficult when I got no sense of fashion, like AT ALL. And thanks for all these wonderful op shops, now I can look as if nothing’s changed without crushing my bank account.
